Pirongia-o-Te Aroaro-ō-Kahu / 'the scented pathway of Kahu' 2024
Size: 1220mm x 605mm
Medium: Original Acrylic on canvas
The name Pirongia-o-Te Aroaro-ō-Kahu, translates to "the scented pathway of Kahu". The name comes from the story of Kahupekapeka, a Tainui tupuna, who named many peaks in the Waikato region after traveling inland from Kāwhia. Kahupekapeka searched for medical plants for healing after a miscarriage.
Pirongia symbolizes a place of healing and Maori view Pirongia as a reciprocal relationship, where looking after and respecting the mountain will provide for them.
